Work with the elderly in aged care residential facilities or in their home, following an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support with personal care.

  • Class attendance 1 day per week
  • 5 hour classes 9.30am-3.00pm – face to face
  • 140 hours work placement in an aged care residential facility
  • Approximately 20 hours mandatory practicum and self-paced learning per week (discuss with Training Coordinator)

Practical Placement is a vital component of the course. It is essential for giving you the opportunity to gain valuable skills, experience and knowledge and the opportunity to apply skills learnt in a real work environment.

You will be required to undertake 140 hours of work placement, where you will learn how to work as part of a team with other professionals. Assisting with the design, implementation and evaluation of health and leisure activities and programs.

Students are encouraged to organise their own placement, or NRCHI can coordinate placement for students.

Before starting placement, you will be required to provide at your own expense a Victorian Police Check and any other pre-employment screening checks your work placement requires.

Assessment is conducted using a range of methods including written questioning, case studies, scenarios, research tasks and practical demonstrations within the classroom setting and in the workplace.

There is 140 hours of compulsory work placement component to this course, where students will complete a range of workplace tasks during their placement.

Accredited training is assessed against a specified benchmark and is Competency based. This means that no marks are given and students are assessed as either “Satisfactory” or “Not Yet Satisfactory” If a student is deemed Not Yet Satisfactory there is at least one chance to resubmit the work. All tasks must be satisfactorily completed in order to gain Competency in the unit. In addition, some units cannot have the assessment result finalised until the student has completed a specified number of placement hours.

Course is made up of 15 units – 9 core units and 6 elective units.

  • HLTINF006 Apply basic principles and practices of infection control

Elective units:

  • CHCAGE011 Provide support to people living with dementia
  • CHCAGE013 Work effectively in aged care
  • CHCCCS036 Support relationships with carers and families
  • CHCCCS037 Visit client residence
  • CHCCCS044 Follow established person-centred behaviour support
  • CHCPAL003 Deliver care services using a palliative approach

There are no pre-requisite requirements for individual units of competency. North Ringwood Community House has set the following entry requirements for enrolment in this course:

  • An interview is required prior to enrolment which includes a “Pre-Training Review” to enable us to ensure that the course you are choosing is the most suitable one for you
  • You will be required to undertake a language, literacy and numeracy quiz. The purpose of this is to ascertain any language, numeracy or literacy barriers for which you may need support and to ensure you have the best chance to successfully undertake this level of study

North Ringwood Community House Inc is an Accredited Training Organisation No. 6434. This course is nationally recognised and accredited. On completion of the course you will receive a testamur for the qualification.

A deposit of $200 is required on enrolment and the balance prior to course commencement. A payment plan for the balance will be negotiated prior to enrolment if required.

*Concession fees are available to those on government pensions and health care cards. These cards must be produced and a copy made for our records.
